How Long Do Macarons Last When Shipped? (And How to Store Them)
This is the question we get most from first-time macaron shippers: how long will they actually last, and how should I store them when they arrive?
The answer depends on a few things — how they were baked, how they were shipped, and how you store them after arrival.
How Long Do Fresh Shipped Macarons Last?
| Storage Method | Shelf Life |
|---|---|
| Room temperature (airtight container) | 2–3 days |
| Refrigerator (airtight container) | 5–7 days |
| Freezer (airtight container) | 2–3 months |
Our Shipping Timeline
At Antonio's Macarons, we bake your order the day before it ships. With our standard 2–3 business day shipping, your macarons arrive 1–2 days after baking. That means when you receive them, you have:
- Up to 5–6 more days at room temperature (airtight)
- Up to 6–7 more days refrigerated
- Up to 3 months if you freeze them immediately
Best Way to Store Macarons After They Arrive
Refrigerator (Recommended for 3–7 Day Enjoyment)
Place macarons in an airtight container in a single layer, or stack them with parchment paper between layers. Take them out of the refrigerator 30 minutes before eating — they taste much better at room temperature.
Room Temperature (Best for Same-Day or Next-Day)
If you're eating them within 2–3 days, an airtight container at room temperature is fine. Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources.
Freezer (Long-Term Storage)
Macarons freeze remarkably well. Place them in an airtight container or freezer bag, separate layers with parchment paper. To thaw, move to the refrigerator overnight, then bring to room temperature for 20–30 minutes before serving. Texture is largely preserved — most people can't tell a frozen-then-thawed macaron from a fresh one.
Signs Your Macarons Have Gone Off
- Sticky or excessively wet shells (exposure to moisture)
- Cracked or crumbly shells (too dry, too old)
- Off smell (particularly with cream or fruit fillings)
- Filling separation or weeping
Tips for Maximum Freshness
- Don't store macarons near strong-smelling foods in the fridge — they absorb odors
- Always let refrigerated macarons come to room temperature before eating
- The "maturation period" is real — macarons taste slightly better 24–48 hours after baking as the filling softens the shell. Shipped macarons are already in this window when they arrive.
