The Hudson Valley's foliage season (roughly Oct 1–Nov 10 this year, peak mid-October) is the single best painting-subject season on the East Coast, and every paint-night studio in the region leans into it. Whether you're attending a session, running one, or painting at home, here are the fall subjects that actually work — ranked by paintability — plus the reference spots.

The Classics (High Success Rate, All Levels)

1. The Foliaged Lane / Country Road: a road curving through fall trees with a big sky — the top paint-night fall subject because the composition is forgiving and the color work is where the season shines. Beginner-friendly.
2. The River + Hills Vista: the Hudson Highlands in October from a reference photo — orange ridge over blue water. The high-contrast autumn palette flatters every painter.
3. Solo Tree on a Hill: one great flaming maple against a dusk sky — teaches color gradation (sky) and silhouette (tree); dramatic, simple, always popular.

1. The value-first underpainting: block the scene in 3 values (dark trees, mid field, light sky) before touching color — fall scenes fail when the colors are pretty but the *shapes* are mush
2. The dapple, not the leaf: foliage isn't painted leaf-by-leaf; it's painted as massed color with dappled edges — a round brush's corner, stipple-and-drag, 4 colors per tree mass max (a burnt sienna, an orange, a yellow-ochre, a red) and let the eye blend them
