From behind a bakery counter, you learn things about mothers that nobody writes books about. Today being Mother's Day, we wanted to write some of it down — a shorter post than usual, sweeter than usual, and entirely sincere.
What We See From Behind the Counter
Every week we watch mothers do the quiet math of care: the mom buying the exact cupcake flavors her kids would pick (not the ones she'd pick); the mom ordering her own birthday cake while directing us to write someone else's name on it; the mom at a paint night who can't relax into her own canvas until she's checked everyone's work and laughed at everyone's jokes. The whole industry of celebration runs on mothers' logistics and mothers' love, and working in a bakery is a front-row seat.
To the Moms Who Taught Us to Bake
A disproportionate number of bakers trace the origin story to a woman's kitchen: the grandmother who let them lick the bowl, the mother who measured flour like it was sacred or like it was nothing. Antonio's exists because of women like that — the recipes in our case carry their DNA.
