Start With the Truth: Acrylic Paint Does Not Forgive
Most paint and sip studios — our sessions in New Windsor included — use acrylic paint because it dries fast enough to take your canvas home the same night. Acrylic is permanent on fabric once dry. That doesn't mean you need to wear old gym clothes; it means you should skip anything you'd be heartbroken to splatter. A good rule: if you wouldn't wear it to cook a tomato-sauce dinner without an apron, don't wear it to paint.
The Ideal Paint and Sip Outfit Formula
After hosting many painting events, here's the formula that works for nearly everyone:
- A dark or busy-patterned top — navy, black, olive, floral. Small splatters disappear into patterns.
- Sleeves you can push up — three-quarter sleeves or rollable cuffs keep fabric out of your palette.
- Comfortable jeans or casual pants — you'll be standing or perched on a stool for about two hours.
- Closed-toe, flat shoes you don't love too much — drips happen downward.
- Nothing dangly — long necklaces, big scarves, and wide bracelet stacks find wet paint like magnets.
What About the Apron?
Virtually every paint and sip provides aprons, and ours do too — but aprons cover your front, not your sleeves, shoulders, or the side you tuck your brush hand against. Think of the apron as your first line of defense, not a force field. If you're coming straight from work, bring a cheap button-down or oversized shirt to throw over your outfit. That's the move regulars swear by: two minutes to change, zero worry all night.
Seasonal Considerations for Your Night Out
In spring and fall, studios run warm once fifteen people are painting, so layer lightly — a cardigan you can tie around your waist beats a pullover you'll overheat in. In summer, short sleeves are ideal. In winter, leave the big coat at the coat rack immediately; painting in a puffy sleeve is how cuffs end up in the ultramarine. If you're celebrating something — a birthday, a bachelorette, an anniversary — a fun accessory like earrings or a hair clip photographs well without getting in the way.
Date Night vs. Group Outing: Does It Change Anything?
Not much. For a date night paint and sip, you'll want to feel a little more polished — dark jeans, a nice-ish top, done. Nobody at a paint night is judging outfits; everyone is staring at their own canvas wondering why their tree looks like broccoli. For birthday groups and bachelorette paint parties, some groups coordinate colors or matching sashes, which is fun until the sash dips into the paint tray. Short sashes. Or paint first, accessorize for photos after.
A Quick Word on Nails, Hair, and Jewelry
Fresh manicure from this morning? Paint night is safe — you're holding a brush, not finger-painting — but gel nails that haven't cured fully can smudge against a canvas edge. Long hair should go in a low ponytail or clip; leaning in to paint detail work is exactly when a curl lands on a wet corner. Rings are fine; loose bangles are not. And if you wear a watch, your non-dominant wrist will spend two hours hovering over a palette — slip it in your pocket or prep your mind to wash the band after.
